Last weekend Board President Zimmer said, "“We understand that a narrative that blames charter schools for all that is wrong in public education may serve short-term organizing goals but is counterproductive and doesn’t help every child.” Even Mr. Zimmer understands UTLA's recent efforts to blame everything wrong with the district, including its finances, on charters is a false narrative. LAUSD has had declining enrollment for nearly a decade and has struggled to budget in a responsible way. Instead it continues to borrow against its students. Scapegoating charters is an easy way for folks to avoid having difficult conversations regarding fixed costs, pensions, and unfunded liabilities.
