I was a charter member of UTLA in 1969. At this time, there were what I call "real issues" that affected our teaching performance. Some time in the 80's I observed the union's voice shift from "what is best for students to what is best for the adults in the building" - the union in my view had lost its way. I left in the early nineties and became a part of another district where I sensed that once again students were the focus of decisions.
