There is a place for charters, but we already have the highest number of charters of any other city. Charters attract more engaged parents, which all the research shows is critical for school success. Therefore, to some extent more charters will take away engaged parents from other schools in the area. I think we need a more holistic approach and perhaps we should focus on going deep in entire communities and work together to turn around an entire community. Perhaps take proven charters, magnets, and traditional school leaders into a single community to see what we can do to turn around an entire community at once. This is hard work, but it would be an excellent model for the future.
