My child attends an excellent progressive, socioeconomically diverse charter. He also has an IEP and has absolutely thrived at the school. I know firsthand that charters do, indeed, serve all kids. In fact, some are models of inclusion and integration that are hard to find in neighborhood schools because neighborhoods are often segregated by race and income. Good charters should be allowed to expand, and ones that cannot perform should be shut down. It's all about what's best for kids. Right now, LAUSD tries to shut down the great ones down - much less allow them to expand. UTLA and the board members it donates to do not want charters to succeed and take students from LAUSD because of money.
