I think Teacher's Unions are important to make sure we're respecting and protecting one of the most important professions in our country - teaching. However, the political power (namely their lobbying and campaign funding) of the teacher's unions has gotten too strong and they have been too successful at putting teachers' and administrators' needs ahead of kids' needs. LAUSD paid out $300 million in sexual abuse lawsuits because the laws make it almost impossible to fire even an accused sex offender. When budget cuts come, schools are forced to lay off all the new teachers who don't have as much seniority - rather than focusing on teaching ability. To name two examples...
